Hypnosis Myths

(and the TRUTH)

It’s normal to have questions about hypnotherapy,
especially when there’s so much misinformation out there.

Let me set the record straight:

Placebo effect

"Hypnotherapy is basically just the placebo effect"

Hypnotherapy is a powerful, evidence-based tool for real and lasting change. Research shows that hypnosis has measurable, distinct effects on the brain. In a study published in Cerebral Cortex (2016), researchers at Stanford University used brain imaging to observe participants under hypnosis and found significant changes in brain activity related to focus, awareness, and emotional regulation. They also saw an increase in what they describe as the “brain-body connection” that helps the brain process and control what's going on in the body.

"Hypnotherapy is a magic, one-session fix"

While hypnosis can create powerful shifts, it’s not a magic, one-session cure. It’s true that hypnotherapy usually takes less time than other forms of therapy. However, real, lasting change, especially for deeper issues, can take time and consistency. Hypnotherapy works by gently uncovering and reprogramming subconscious patterns, which often happens in layers. Many clients start to notice meaningful change after just a few sessions, but lasting transformation is a process, not a quick fix. Everyone goes at their own pace, and there is no right or wrong timeline. I’ll follow you.

"Hypnosis can make you do something you don’t want to do"

One of the most common myths about hypnosis is that it can make you do something against your will, but that simply isn’t true. Even in a state of hypnosis, you are always in control. Hypnosis is a natural, relaxed state of altered awareness, not mind control. You can’t be made to do or say anything you don’t want to. In fact, hypnotherapy works best when you feel safe, empowered, and fully aligned with your own intentions.

"Reprogramming your subconscious mind will change your personality"

Hypnotherapy never changes who you are. In fact, by freeing yourself of your subconscious emotions, beliefs, and patterns that keep you stuck, we set you free to be MORE of your real self.  I can’t make you any different than you naturally are, and I would never want to, because who you naturally are is perfect and complete as it is. Think of it like clearing residue out of a pipe so that everything flows exactly as it’s meant to. Our work together can only enable you to be the most free, most clear, most authentic version of YOU.

"Hypnotherapy is only used to quit smoking or lose weight"

Hypnotherapy can help with anxiety, stress, confidence, sleep issues, chronic pain, phobias, surgery recovery, emotional healing, and so much more. It works by creating shifts in the subconscious mind, where many of our patterns and beliefs are stored, making it a powerful tool for a wide range of personal growth and healing goals, not just habit change.

"Not everyone can be hypnotized"

The truth is, everyone is able to experience hypnosis with the right conditions and a skilled practitioner, but they must be fully willing to. If hypnosis is resisted, it will not work. Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention and relaxation. While everyone experiences it a little differently, and some may need a bit of practice, everyone is capable of experiencing a trance state deep enough for profound change.

In our sessions, you’re always safe and in control. Your subconscious mind will only bring forward what you’re ready to process. In fact, whatever comes up in your subconscious mind, you are already dealing with the effects of it every day. You got this. We will go at your pace, and I will never pressure you to do anything that doesn’t feel right to you.
